The Cailleach: A Culling of Oppressive Systems

The Cailleach is a celtic winter goddess, who is known for ushering in and ruling over the dark and cold.

I’ve been walking around in a post-election daze since last Tuesday. How is this possible? How are we here again (but even worse this time)? I feel exhausted and full of rage, as many of us do. As I’ve walking about in said daze, I keep hearing ‘The Cailleach. The Cailleach’ over and over again. One of the ways that spirit and my spirit guides communicate with me is through clairaudience. So I knew that this was probably a message containing some important information. As I began researching The Cailleach and who she is, it started to become clear that she wanted to be channeled through a weaving and also a blurb of writing, so here we are.

This is the first time a being has been channeled through a weaving, and it was quite the experience. As I was creating the patterns I saw, I was also receiving guidance on how The Cailleach’s particular medicine is needed for these current times.

What we are seeing and witnessing right now is a death rattle of oppressive systems. When a society makes significant headways with progress, intense backlash is often seen shortly after. I’ve been thinking about the women in Afghanistan and Iran back in the 1970’s. If you look at photos online, they are wearing skirts and slacks, and have an incredible amount of freedom. But not long after, all hell broke loose and it’s kinda been that way ever since. What we are seeing with the current sociopolitical landscape in the U.S. is an ‘all hell broke loose’ moment. But there is some hope. At least, I have to believe there is.

What we are currently seeing right now isn’t exactly a signal of regression, but a death rattle.

In recent history in the U.S., women have started to take less and less shit (4B movement is an example), and men have gotten more and more mad about it. We are speaking out about our experiences on TikTok and other social media platforms regarding imbalanced domestic labor, the [still] very prevalent violence of men, and how we are beginning to not see any benefit to heterosexual relationships at all really. This doesn’t sit well in a society full of men that are taught they are owed everything, including and especially women. The backlash has come in the form of the overturning of Roe v. Wade, Project 2025, and a large amount of Gen Z men voting for Trump.

What we are currently seeing right now isn’t exactly a signal of regression, but a death rattle. Terrible men [and a large number of white women] are grasping at the ropes of their perceived loss of power, and they are retaliating. What we need to do right now is understand this death rattle for what it is, and keep on doing what we can to progress while also keeping the hope.

The Cailleach is a celtic winter goddess, who is known for ushering in and ruling over the dark and cold. In the winter, she is said to walk the land, striking the ground and trees with her staff to crush any signs of life and growth. She has one eye and deathly pale skin, and is both feared and revered. It is said that she is both hag and old crone, and having both good and bad qualities.

The Cailleach is said to walk the lands of winter, striking the ground and trees with her staff to crush any signs of life and growth.

She was channeled through this weaving to help bring in the death of old, oppressive systems. The three pillars of oppression; capitalism, patriarchy, and racism; are the growth at the end of her staff. Woven into this piece are knot & fiber spells, along with incantations for oppressive systems to coil into the ground and toil into the throes of winter. Essences of The Cailleach are tied and woven in as a collective spell to help this process along.

I don’t have a lot of advice on what we can do right now. I’m still in a bit of shock, and thinking clearly about a road to progress is a bit difficult at the current moment. But The Callieach came through with a message on her advice for these times: “See things for what they are, hold the hope, and keep doing your magic and spells for the good of the collective. Envision the death rattle of oppressive systems being beaten into the ground of winter…sooner rather than later. Our visions, spells, community, magic and light is needed now more than ever. Keep the faith.”
